Wellness Time With Ava Johanna

When we think about a balanced, an eco-friendly and vegan lifestyle, yoga just fits into that way of living. So once we learned more about our favorite yoga teacher Ava, we got very excited and wanted to learn about her and her eco conscious lifestyle.  Guys, meet Ava Johanna aka @avajohanna!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find love in yoga?

Southern California born and raised, I moved to San Diego after high school and immediately started working at a marketing agency and devoted my life to moving up within the marketing world. I loved it, but I was driving myself too hard and ended up burning out a year ago. It was around the same time that I started practicing yoga. At first it was strictly for the physical benefits, but when I found my studio, I was absolutely hooked on the way it made me feel: physically, emotionally, spiritually.

I enrolled in my teacher training and it was at that time that I realized working for someone else at an agency where I would often be at my desk until 7-8 at night was not the lifestyle I wanted to continue. I quit my job, launched Kicking Asana and started writing and offering marketing services for wellness brands and other yoga teachers. This allowed me to work remotely and travel across South America. I absolutely love what I do now and am so grateful to work with incredible healing souls and integrate yoga and marketing together to change the world!

You have been to some incredible destinations, what is the favorite place you have visited thus far?

There’s so many incredible places! I am being called to go back to Costa Rica. I absolutely loved it there. The people, nature, the energy. It is a fantastic and magical place!

What would you recommend to those who would like to follow your example and be entrepreneur?

If you have an idea, go for it. I think so many times we get caught up in planning and then never get to executing. The first step is the hardest, but I’ve found that once you get going things fall in line for you!

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would that be and why?

I have a trip planned to India and Bali in April which I am so excited for, but I would love to go back to Hawaii. I haven’t been since I was a child and I am eager to get back into nature and experience the beauty of the islands!

What is your beauty advice to those who travel frequently? How do keep that beautiful glow in your skin?

Oh goodness! Thank you so much. I have had major struggles with my skin in the past so a strict skincare routine is so important to me at home and on the road. I use Face Reality which is an all natural skincare line with a specific line for acne that has changed my skin completely. I make sure especially when I’m traveling to wash my face in the morning and in the evening. I use toner and moisturizer and if the water in the area is clean I also rub an ice cube on my face in the morning and night to help with any inflammation. It’s also super important to wash your face right after you get off the plane because it’s so full of germs!

What are the products you cannot travel without?

Face Reality skincare line - I don’t care how much room it takes up in my bag! My camera, GoPro, laptop and a baseball cap. Those items go with me on literally every trip I take.

What is a destination on your bucket list?

India has been on my bucket list ever since I dove into a yoga practice. I’m so excited to go in April of next year and can’t wait to experience all the culture and food.

Do you have a motto you live by?

I have a few, but I would say more that they are mantras that I repeat to myself every day. The one that I say every morning before I start my day is: I am ready to work with the Universe to awaken and accomplish my dreams.

I am very much into manifestation and what you think about you bring about so I try to fill my days with as many positive affirmations as possible.

What's your fashion style?

My fashion style changes all the time! You’ll usually catch me in yoga pants and basics, but I love to switch it up and wear funky pants, patterns, and bold jewelry.

If you could give one piece of advice to any inspired blogger - what would that be?

Don’t be discouraged by what’s already out there and don’t get too stuck comparing yourself to others. We all have unique stories and the way in which we communicate our stories is entirely unique to us. Even if you feel like someone else is doing the same thing as you, know that your story might resonate with someone more so than theirs does so I think the most important thing is to just get your story out there and start creating.

What's your favorite meditation/relaxation song?

Ooh great question! My yoga classes are all pretty upbeat and I usually steer clear of the traditional yoga-esque music because I love the way electronic music grounds me into my body. I’ve been really digging Alabama Shakes and Leon Bridges for the surrender series when I teach. When I’m meditating, I usually don’t have any music playing, but I absolutely love the sound of crystal bowls and sound healing.

Who or what inspires you?

My biggest inspiration in the blogger sphere is Valeria Hinojosa (@waterthruskin) and Jordan Younger (@thebalancedblonde) - They’ve got such an engaged audience and are truly role models online. I listen to both of them religiously because they’ve got so much experience and education to share about conscious living and spirituality.

What would you recommend to those who want to be more conscious about the environment? How should they take the first step to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle?

Do your research! It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the documentaries we see out today and get discouraged about everything, but there are so many solutions to live a more conscious lifestyle. Find out the things that you can easily change and do it. Don’t try and do it all at once though, like anything, slowly integrate until you’ve found a happy balanced life.
