Talking About Veganism with Caitlin Shoemaker aka From My Bowl

When we first discovered Caitlin's YouTube channel we were still on our journey learning about vegan cooking. Her easy, fresh and delicious recipes quickly stole a part of our heart, and helped us to not to be afraid of experimenting with different flavors and herbs. Her creativity and presentation embodies the concept "eat the rainbow" and it just makes cooking so much fun! It has been a great learning journey for us and we knew we had to interview her! Now you guys can start making her nutritious, healthy and delicious recipes!!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
"Well hey there - my name is Caitlin Shoemaker and I'm the recipe developer, content creator, and creative behind From My Bowl. I love creating healthy AND tasty recipes that everyone can enjoy! When I'm not in the kitchen, you'll probably find me on my yoga mat or outside on a walk."


When you became vegan and what made your lifestyle change?

"I actually went vegan on my 21st birthday! I was interested in vegan food for quite some time before then, but once I learned about the ethical arguments, I went vegan overnight."

What advice can you give to those who are on the path to becoming vegan?

"Go at a pace that is going to be the most sustainable for you. Some people can go vegan overnight and find it totally doable, whereas other people need to take more time! If the transition is more difficult to you, I think small steps are key to making the lifestyle really stick. I would much rather have someone take 6+ months to go vegan and actually stay vegan than someone try it out for a week, feel overwhelmed, and go back to their old dietary choices."

What’s your current favorite summer recipe that you can share with us?

"Hmm...I'd have to go with this Pineapple Coleslaw recipe that I recently posted on my blog! It's light, tasty, and super versatile. You can eat it alone, or use it as a topper over sloppy joes, burgers, and/or tacos!"

Sweet or savory?

"Savory! I usually eat sweet food for breakfast, but I have to have savory food for lunch and dinner or I just feel weird. I also tend to like salty desserts (salted caramel, salted chocolate, etc) more than pure sweet ones."

Where is your favorite place to travel?

"That's honestly too hard! I like to travel to a wide variety of places and appreciate how different Mother Nature can be. Some of my favorite trips have been to the Pacific Northwest (where I now live!), and to Martha's Vineyard, MA."

Since you travel a lot, do you have a favorite plant-based restaurant around the country?

"Even though I've tried food from vegan restaurants from all over the US and the world, my favorite spot is still Great Sage in Clarksville, MD. It's a great mix of indulgent and healthy vegan meals, the food changes seasonally, and everything is downright DELICIOUS! If you ever find yourself there, get the Carrot Cake!"

What’s your favorite way to relax and restore? 

"I love to wind down with some relaxing music (Bon Iver and Novo Amor are my favorites) while I do a Face Mask! My favorite one is Oak Lane by Franklin & Whitman; they're a 100% vegan company that donates 5% of all sales to dog rescue organizations! And, their stuff just really works well ;)"

Do you have a motto you live by?

"Not particularly! I do have one quote that I love though, by Charles Bukowsky. It goes, "We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that death will tremble to take us." 

What’s your fashion style?

"I would say it's very "minimal" - I generally gravitate towards solids, neutrals, and simple yet timeless pieces. I love to find pieces that are versatile, but have a little something unique about them! (For example, I love the open back and bow of the Chloe Tie Top )"

Yoga or SoulCycle?

"While I do love Soulcycle, I practice yoga 6-7 times a week and it has truly transformed my mentality for the better. So I have to go with yoga!"
